最近じわじわと日本人学生に人気が出てきた映画・アニメーション業界での仕事、勉強。
バンクーバーは映画の撮影が非常に盛んで、
第二のハリウッドと言われているくらい今熱い！

今回はアート専門学校として有名なAi Vancouverに実際に通学していて、
今では様々なハリウッド映画の作成に携わっているカナダ現地人にインタビューに協力していただけたので皆様にも生の声をお届けします！

What do you do now?( your short career summarized)
今は何をされていますか。(簡単なキャリア説明をお願いします。)

I am a Visual Effects Artist that works with many different software programs to create computer-generated images for Film and Motion Pictures. My specific title is 3D Generalist, which means I must be able to perform any 3D task in Visual Effects when needed. This includes Animation, Texture Painting, Lighting, Modeling, and many more.
色々なソフトウェアプログラムを使って、
映画やアニメなどのコンピューターイメージを作るビジュアルエフェクト(映像視覚効果)アーティストをしています。その中でも僕の専門としているのは3Dジェネラリストといって、3D全般を受け持っています。
皆さんがご存知の通り3Dと言えば立体映像を作り出すのですが、
この中には動きを作るアニメーションだったり、質感を出すための色を付け、
光沢、影をつける、キャラクターや造形物の模型(造形)作成などなどその他コンピューター上で色々なものを作り上げるという仕事です。

Why did you decide to study visual effect?
どうしてビジュアルエフェクトを勉強しようと思ったのですか。

I decided to study Visual Effects because I really liked watching movies and seeing the cool effects that were made. It looked very challenging and I always loved to make art on the computer. Also, my mother told me that I would be good at it, so I trusted her.
本当に映画を見るのが好きなのと、その中で映し出されているかっこいい画像を見るのがすきでした。
映画内で使用されているエフェクトは実際作るのがとても難しそうだし、チャレンジングに見えたけど、パソコンで何か作る、という作業はいつも好きだったのでこの業界に興味を持ちました。
あとは僕の母親が、きっとこの職種(ものをパソコンで作り上げるの)は僕にあってるよと背中を押してくれたので彼女の言うことを信じて挑戦してみようと思いました。

Why did you decide to go to Ai?
どうしてArt Institute(Ai)に入学しようと思ったのですか。

My mom actually found the school for me, and she told me to go check it out. When I arranged a tour, they introduced me to all kinds of courses and opportunities that I could have if I go to school there.
実は母親がこの学校を探してきてくれました。良かったら学校見に行ってみたら？と。
実際に学校見学に行った時にAiのスタッフが全てのコース、
そしてもしこの学校に行ったら将来的にどんな可能性が広がるか詳しく説明してくれて興味を持ちました。

What did you like about this program and what you learn?
受講したプログラムのどんなところが好きでしたか。
そしてプログラムから何を学びましたか。

The best thing about the Visual Effects program at Art Institute was that it was very “hands on” and “do it yourself”. I got to use professional film cameras, green screens, and the latest animation software packages. I also was going out to Downtown Vancouver, local parks, or even forests just to film movies for my school projects. Visual Effects program covered so many skills and used so much different equipment – so I really enjoyed that a lot. After the program is finished, you learn everything you need to know about film, 3d Animation, and artistic fundamentals for drawing and cinematography.
AiのVisual Effect （Special Effect）プログラムの何が一番良いかというと、“実践(実地)教育”、
そして〝自分自身でやる”というところです。
このプログラム受講中、プロ仕様の映画カメラを使用、グリーンスクリーンの前で撮影、最新のソフトウェアパッケージを試せることができました。他にもバンクーバーダウンタウンや公園、林の中にまで入って学校のプロジェクトのための撮影を行うこともありました。
Visual Effectsプログラム中は実際に撮影、映像作り等に使われる様々な道具を使用することができて色々なスキルを身に付けることができます。ですので受講中は本当に楽しかったです!
このプログラムが終了する頃には映画フィルム、3Dアニメーション、映画撮影技術、デッサン、製図の基礎知識など必要全ての知識を学ぶことできていると思います。

What did you like the most about school and why?
Aiの特に何が好きでしたか。そしてそれはなぜですか。

The school had instructors that were working in the industry to teach and mentor you. They also made sure to have the same equipment that is being used in professional studios. The equipment was easy to access and use, and it made studying much easier and realistic. The school made sure you had the tools you needed to create anything you wanted.
Ai講師達は実際の現場で現役として働いている人たちばかりです。
現場で活躍している講師達だからこそ、
学校で使用している各道具、教材はちゃんと現場で実際に使用されているかどうかわかっているので、
常に新しい道具や教材、システムを学校にいながらも手に取って触れることができました。
この工具（パソコン等を含む）たちは在学生が簡単に手にとって使用することが許されているので、
学校にいながらも自分が将来仕事をしたときのことを想像することができてよかったです。
Aiは常に学生達が何を必要としているか、という点を生徒の視点からも色々配慮されているのが良かったです。

Who do you recommend to take this program?
誰にこのプログラムをお勧めたいですか。

This is my favorite question. There is a specific type of person that I think is a good match for Visual Effects. You have to love making art, but also love solving puzzles and problems. Visual Effects is a lot of problem solving and it isn’t easy. It takes a lot of time and it is very tedious work. So only the people that truly are passionate and love these sorts of things can keep going in the industry.
これは僕の大好きな質問です。
僕の中で特定の〝Visual Effectに合っている人“というのがありますね。
まず、物を作ることが好き、アートを作り出すことが大好きというのはもちろん。
でも、加えてパズルを解くのが大好き、そして問題解決が好きでなければならない、ということ。
Visual Effectは沢山の問題の解読があって簡単ではない。問題解決って多くの時間がかかるし、飽き飽きしてしまう仕事ですよね。だからこそ本当にこれらの事に対して情熱的な想いがある人だけがこの業界で続けていけると思います。

Did you have any knowledge about VFX before you enter school?
学校入学前はVisual Effectの知識がありましたか。

Not really. My high school didn’t have any kind of Visual Effects classes, so I had no experience before attending school.
そんなことはありませんでした。僕の行った高校にもこのような学部はありませんでした。
Aiに行くまでは全くVisual Effectの知識は無かったです。

Would you recommend this program who do not know anything about visual effect/ animation?
こちらのプログラムはまったくビジュアルエフェクトやアニメーションの事を知らない人にもお勧めできますか。

まったくVisual Effect,そしてAnimationに知識がない方にもこのプログラムはお勧めできますか。
Well, I didn’t know anything about Visual Effects when I took the course, and I was still successful. Also most of my friends didn’t have knowledge or experience either, so it’s ok. You just need to have patience and enjoy problem solving.

そうですね、前の質問の回答と重複しますが、僕自身この学校に入学するまでは全くVisual Effectの知識がありませんでしたが今こうして現場で成功することができています。
あと、実際僕の友人のほとんどが経験ない人達ばかりでしたから大丈夫でしょう。
辛抱強さ、そして問題解決が好きであればこのプログラムは経験がなくてもお勧めできると思います。

How did you get a job after graduated school?
卒業後どのようにして仕事を取得したのですか。

I actually got my job offer before graduation. Some of my instructors were working at a studio called Frantic Films in Vancouver, and they put a recommendation for me to start as a Junior Artist. I took my interview and they wanted to hire me before I was even graduated. I told them to wait until Monday after my last day at school, and I started then.
実は僕の場合、卒業前に仕事のオファーをいただきました。
インストラクターの中にはFrantic Films in Vancouverというスタジオで働いている方々がおり、彼らが僕がジュニアアーティストとしてスタートできるよう推薦状を書いてくれました。
その後インタビューを受けて、そこのスタジオの人達が卒業前から是非働いてほしいと言ってくださいましたが、僕はまずはちゃんと卒業したかったので、卒業した翌週月曜まで待ってほしい、と伝えて、
その通り卒業日の翌週から仕事がスタートしました。

Yes! I highly recommend studying in Vancouver because all the big studios are here now. Vancouver is the Visual Effects “hot spot” right now. I think there are more studios and artists here today than ever before, and it’s growing very very fast!
もちろんです。今、大手有名スタジオのほとんどがバンクーバーに位置しているといえます。
バンクーバーは今Visual Effectの〝Hot Spot”となっています。
今まで以上に沢山のスタジオやアーティストがバンクーバーに集まってきていると思います。
この業界が大きくなるのは本当に本当に早いですよ!

Do you think there are some opportunities for international students to gain some work experience after graduation/while they are studying at Ai? And why.
留学生でもAi学校在学中、そして卒業後に実際に現場での就労経験のチャンスがあると思いますか。そしてなぜですか。

Most of my friends in Visual Effects are international… I think it’s very possible for international students to get work in Vancouver after graduation. But as for getting work experience during studying, it’s also possible but not as common. Not every studio has an Intern-ship program for students.
僕の周りの友達のほとんど(Visual Effect関係者)は留学生、世界から集まってきている現地の人以外の人々です。
ですのでAiに通学した留学生も卒業後に仕事をゲットするのは可能な話だと思います。
在学中の経験についても可能だと思いますが、そんなに多くはないのでしょうか。
インターンシッププログラムを設けているスタジオはそこまで多くはないと思いますので。
